Welcome to

Mrs. Farrant's Website

I am a Visual Art and English teacher in the Surrey School District #36.  I teach Art and English at Sullivan Heights Secondary School. In addition to teaching all levels of English and Visual Art, I also teach adult and child Sculpture classes at the Surrey Art Centre.  I completed a BFA and BED at  Simon Fraser University, and I am planning on starting my Masters soon.  I enjoy all mediums of Art, though my favourite is sculpture.  I am an avid reader and love spending time outdoors with my husband and dog, Meeka.

The Writer’s Notebook

We forget all too soon the things we thought we could never forget. We forget the loves and betrayals alike, forget what we whispered and what we screamed, we forget who we really are. - Joan Didion (a writer)

English Students are practicing their expressive writing by writing daily in their "Writer's Notebooks."  Each Friday students select their favourite piece and read it aloud to the class.  I will be posting some selections from Friday's readings in the "Portfolio" section.  Please check weekly for student samples.

Expressive writing is personal writing. It expresses and explores the personal feelings and observations of the writer. The piece may attempt to answer a question, state an opinion or recount the writer's personal experiences. Many times, expressive writing does all of these. Unlike most forms of writing, this type of written communication isn't focused on mechanics.

GENERAL ENGLISH COURSE DESCRIPTION

This semester we will be using a variety of literary forms and non-fiction pieces to develop our skills in speaking and listening, reading and viewing, and writing and representing.  English is an opportunity for you to grow as individuals and improve your understanding of the world around us through a series literary texts and discussions.

ENGLISH COURSE EVALUATION

In order to cover the Prescribed Learning Outcomes students will be required to complete various assignments, which will focus on the three areas of speaking, reading and writing.  We will be using criterion-referenced assessment (performance standards) for the majority of assignments in the course and will participate in a variety of learning opportunities such as small and large group discussions, individual work and co-operative group work.  In order to complete the major assignments in this course, you must first complete a number of “building block” assignments and activities.  Your marks ideally are a reflection of your achievement: a product of your ability, effort and development.
